Cellular pathology is a diagnostic service that looks at cells of the body from either tissues or fluids. Very thin sections from the tissue (Histopathology) or cells from the fluids (Cytopathology) are placed on glass slides, dyed various colours and examined under a microscope.
By looking at the way that the cells are arranged, how they have developed and how they are functioning, it is possible to determine if a patient has a disease, inflammation, a cancer or a non-cancerous growth.
Findings from a patient’s cellular pathology studies are discussed at multi-disciplinary team meetings with other clinics, and the team of experts work together to decide an appropriate treatment plan or review how a treatment is progressing.
