Description of Department/Service

General Information
The Division of Colorectal Surgery at Tallaght University Hospital (TUH) has established itself as a leading centre in the use of minimally invasive colorectal surgical techniques. The unit has a national and international reputation as a centre of excellence in the areas of laparoscopic techniques and transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEMS).

Ninety percent of all colorectal resections are undertaken laparoscopically, and The Division of Colorectal Surgery is the only unit in the country to offer TEMS. Working closely with the well established gastroenterology Department in TUH, the Division of Colorectal Surgery provides surgical input for the full spectrum of benign and malignant colorectal disease.

The unit offers a comprehensive range of pelvic floor physiology as well as Specialist Nurse input for colorectal cancer, coloproctology and stoma care. An outpatient flexible sigmoidoscopy service was established in 2006, which facilitates urgent GP referrals.
