Description of Department/Service

The Department of Haematology (Laboratory) provides routine haematology and specialised diagnostic services to the hospital and to patients and general practitioners in our catchment area.

Over 400,000 requests for blood testing are received annually. The Haematology Laboratory provides specialised diagnostic services to support the diagnosis and management of Haematological Cancers. In addition, specialised screening for thrombophilia (congenital and acquired thrombotic disorders) is provided, in addition to Anticoagulation services.

There is close liaison with the clinical services and provision of consultative services on a 24 hour basis to the medical and surgical teams. Research is focused on the investigation of preleukaemic Myelodysplastic Syndromes. The laboratory is INAB accredited.

The Haematology Department at the Hospital is recognised by the International Myelodysplastic Syndromes Foundation as a Centre of Excellence for the diagnosis and treatment of Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS). This is the only such recognised centre in Ireland.

Much of our research is focussed on MDS and similar marrow failure syndromes, and we act in an advisory role for Irish Physicians and Irish patients with MDS, who often come to see us for a second opinion.
