Trauma orthopaedic patients are usually admitted to hospital via the Emergency Department.
Elective orthopaedic patients are referred by their GP to the outpatient clinics and if admission to hospital is required then this is arranged in conjunction with the admissions department.
Patients undergoing planned surgery may be invited to attend a Pre-Assessment Clinic to prepare, and are often only admitted into hospital on the morning of their surgery (“Day of Surgery Admission”) avoiding the need to stay in hospital the night before.
