Monday, July 29th, Tallaght University Hospital Foundation (TUHF) launched their annual cycle calling on everyone to saddle up to help Tallaght University Hospital’s cancer ward raise vital funds to purchase specialized chairs for patients receiving cancer treatment in the ward.
Already in its fifth year, this fun event offers cyclists two routes depending on ability - all for just €50. Cyclists can enjoy the 50km or 100km cycle in the beautiful Wicklow mountains. Early registration on www.tuhf.ie before or by 23rd August 2019 guarantees a cycling jersey and gives you a chance to win 1 of 2 €50 Cycle Superstore gift vouchers which will be raffled on the day on the cycle.
Commenting on the selection of the Oncology Day Ward becoming the beneficiary of the TUH Foundation Cycle, Heather Sloane CNM2, said “The staff are delighted to be the selected recipient for funds raised during the charity cycle. Over 5,000 patients attend the Oncology Day Ward at TUH each year for their cancer treatment. In the last two years with the support of Hospital management, donations from other organisations and individuals the Ward areas has received a redesign, redecoration, the purchase of an additional cold cap machine to help prevent a patients hair loss during their treatment, a TV for the waiting area and art therapy for patients to occupy their time whilst going through their treatment.
“But, she continued, the recliner chairs that are available for patients need to be replaced. Patients who attend for their cancer treatment can be on the Ward for a number of hours and sometimes the entire day. Having the most comfortable seat possible is so important for their comfort. A huge thank you to everyone that is getting involved in the cycle and helping to make our patients treatment as comfortable as possible.”
Adding to this former patient Simon Meyler, said: “As a cancer survivor and former patient, I have first-hand experience of the amazing work that Tallaght University Hospital does. They helped me and my family get through my illness, and I am proof that no matter how bad it got, Tallaght was there to help us every step of the way. It would be fantastic to see people coming on board, challenging themselves to cycle this fun event in aid of this incredible ward that helps support cancer patients and their families every day.”
Also speaking about the cycle, Douglas Collins, CEO of the Tallaght University Hospital Foundation, said:
“Anyone who takes part is to be commended for their personal achievement but taking it a step further and using it as an opportunity to raise much needed funds for Tallaght’s cancer ward deserves something more. They cross the finish line safe in the knowledge that they have made a difference in the life of our cancer patients. I would like to acknowledge the enormous effort and commitment from the organizing committee that organise this event each year and the commercial support the initiative receives from the local community by way of sponsorship and donations.”
