(Friday February 16th 2018) The Executive Management Team of Tallaght Hospital has this afternoon welcomed the publication of Project Ireland 2040. In particular the plans for investment in healthcare, particularly the commitment to develop and commission a new Renal Unit and Intensive Care Unit at Tallaght Hospital.
It is gratifying to see that the Project Ireland 2040 plan for investment in healthcare also ties in with the Clinical Services Strategy for Tallaght Hospital - which will see the planned expansion of service provision both on and offsite by the Hospital in the Tallaght area over the coming years.
Welcoming the publication of Project Ireland 2040 David Slevin, CEO of Tallaght Hospital said: “Tallaght Hospital values its role in serving the local community. The Hospital now services a population of over 640,000 people but has been operating consistently with a deficit of 100 beds. Census forecasting sees this demand continuing to increase and the number of people aged 75 or over in Tallaght will increase by 322% over the next 20 years. To put this in perspective, the number of people aged 75 or over in South Dublin will increase by 170% in the same time period.
The plan to increase acute hospital bed capacity nationally by 2,600 is also to be welcomed in light of projected population growth in Tallaght and our wider catchment; it is reassuring to see that capital planning will be in line with demographic needs, and will inform future project selection ahead of the onset of increasing capacity requirements. On behalf of the Hospital I would like to acknowledge the support we have received from local stakeholders for development of the Hospital and I look forward to this support ongoing.”
