(October 10th 2024) The first of two new Podcast series from Tallaght University Hospital (TUH) focusing on Diabetes has just been released. All of the episodes have been funded by the South Dublin County Partnership Health Project (Fettercairn). The launch coincides with October Health Awareness Month in Tallaght.
The first podcast series opens with an individual episode exploring; What is Diabetes with Ann Fitzpatrick an Advanced Nurse Practitioner in Diabetes who works between TUH and the Chronic Disease HUB in the community. Ann also contributed to the next episode on The Reality of Living with Diabetes, featuring an interview with patient Michelle Tracey. The third Episode explored How Patients can best manage their Diabetes Complications with Fiona Boyle a Senior Podiatrist in Integrated Care, and Clinical Nurse Specialist Fiona Fullam. The fourth episode focused on Diabetes Education with Senior Dietitians Fiona O’Shea and Rachel Sheane, who both work in the Chronic Disease Management Hub in the community. In the final episode TUH Senior Counselling Psychologist Noelle O’Keefe dealt with How Diabetes impacts the Mental Health of Patients.
Ann Fitzpatrick, an Advanced Nurse Practitioner in Diabetes at TUH says, “I hope that patients and their loved ones find these podcasts a useful resource. It is estimated over 308,000 people are living in Ireland with Diabetes, which is a chronic disease that needs lifetime management. Knowledge is power when it comes to managing diabetes.”
Commenting on the launch of the podcast series, The Deputy CEO of TUH John Kelly said, “I would encourage everyone to listen to these excellent free podcasts where our experts and highly qualified staff share a wealth of important medical and practical knowledge on each topic. All of the episodes are in keeping with TUH’s important mission of becoming a hospital without walls, striving to improve the health of the population we serve.”
The podcasts were funded as part of a partnership project between the South Dublin County Partnership Health Project (Fettercairn) and Tallaght University Hospital. As they were being launched, the Coordinator of the Fettercairn Community Health Project Samantha Griffin said, “All of these episodes are an excellent free resource for the public in terms of health promotion and the prevention of illness. I would urge anyone to log in and listen because as we all know when it comes to health, prevention is better than cure."
